Obsidian (also known as Lava Glass) is formed when minerals in the ground are exposed to exceedingly high temperatures until they turn to glass. It is found on the walls of lava tubes, coating the inside of the tunnels as magma is transported through the Earth’s crust.

Microscopic gas bubbles trapped amongst the layers of Obsidian glass are what gives this stone its unusual finish. The lava rapidly cools before the air can escape – the pressure exhibited by constant tectonic activity pushes these pockets flat, creating a reflective surface that gives off the unique colour and ‘flash’ associated with Sheen Obsidian.
