Description

Turqurenite

Synthetically enhanced Cryptocrystalline mineral – natural nugget-shape Magnesite, dyed blue with dark veins.

Magnesite is a carbonite mineral that crystallises with a triangular structure, resulting in unique ‘cauliflower-like’ masses within layers of Magnesium rich, igneous rock. It grows from deposits of Magnesium that has been transported by groundwater, settling in veins within the Earth’s crust.

It is commonly grouped with Howlite (a rock with very similar dark veining).  However the radically different mineral content and structural formation allows Magnesite to grow as a much stronger material. For this reason, it is sometimes used in the steel industry as an alloy.

Both materials are very porous and accept synthetic dyes very easily. In Magnesite, its most popular treatment includes turning it a brilliant blue – when paired with the black/grey veining across the surface, it creates a very convincing material that is similar in appearance to the stone Turquoise. The name Turqurenite is a play on words, as this process quickly became highly popular as a cheap alternative (particularly within jewellery making).

As this stone has a high Magnesium content, it is commonly used to treat tooth and bone disorders. It has been known to have a calming effect on stress and anxiety.
