Description

Petrified Wood Black

Black and dark brown-coloured fossilised wood.

Petrified Wood is formed when plant material is buried in sediment. Over time, the groundwater (rich in minerals) will flow through this sediment, and replace the plant material with other things like Silica, Calcite and Pyrite. As a result, we are left with a fossilised version of the original woody material that includes details of bark, wood and cellular structures.

Our Black Petrified Wood is mined along the north-west coast of Madagascar and tumbled in our factory located in South Africa.

The Petrified Wood that is mined in Madagascar is from the Triassic period and is about 220 million years old. It can occur in a few different colours, such as white, yellow, beige, brown, black, grey and occasionally blue. The colour is mainly determined by which minerals in the groundwater are flowing through the sediment surrounding the wood. The predominant minerals in petrified wood that is coloured black are Carbon and Magnesium Oxide.

Petrified Wood has a very soothing and calm energy. It is said to dissolve false images and emotional fears, and help us to get firmly rooted back in reality.
