Description
Selenite Fishtails
Selected from the Tucson Mineral and Gemshow
This is a rare and unique formation of Selenite, comprised of many layers growing at sharp angles. In some cases, formations have grown cross over each other, creating a texture similar to fish scales.
Selenite is a variety of Gypsum that is commonly found in sedimentary rocks. Although Gypsum has many forms, deposits that manifest in large, opaque crystal structures, are given the name Selenite. It is formed when large bodies of water evaporate, leaving behind a layer of salt-like mineral that will eventually crystallise under pressure. Gypsum is characteristically a very brittle stone, only scoring 2 – 2.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
The Cave of the Crystals in Chihuahua, Mexico, holds the worlds biggest Selenite crystals. Currently, the largest shard is 12 meters long, 4 meters thick and weighs 55 tonnes, however the cave has recently closed due to flooding, providing excellent conditions for the crystal to continue their growth.
This stone is believed to be excellent at clearing any blockages within spiritual or energy channels, dispelling negative thoughts by promoting a peaceful mind.
