Description

Serpentine Obelisk XL (A)

Serpentine begins life as an ultramafic rock (igneous rock mainly found at the ocean floor) that is pushed into the Earth’s mantle by tectonic activity. Sea water then mixes with the Magnesium, and as the deposit is subjected to huge pressures, Serpentine minerals are formed. For this reason, it is commonly found in Magnesium-rich igneous rocks along the crests and folds of the Earth’s mantle – particularly Alpine mountain chains and island arcs.

It is named after similarities in texture to a snake’s skin, particularly due to its waxy lustre and many hues included within its matrix. The most popular type of Serpentine is associated with the colour green, which occurs when Iron is substituted for Manganese during its formation.
